Berlin’s Living Laboratory: ZK/Us Convivial Commons

Convivial Commons explores how ecological justice can be reimagined when humans and non-humans share the stage of decision-making. Through artistic, technological, and institutional experimentation, the project creates spaces where more-than-human actors, such as trees, bees, or compost systems, are given symbolic voices and invited into performative parliaments.

In these public sessions, governance itself becomes an experiment: What roles, rights, and rituals are needed to shape a commons that extends beyond the human? By blending AI-generated “talking trees,” interactive performances, citizen science, and workshops, Convivial Commons combines data, emotion, and collective imagination into new forms of ecological communication.

This project is part of EMCCINNO, a European initiative supporting cultural and creative organisations in their transition towards ecological and social sustainability. Within this framework, Convivial Commons anchors ZK/U’s contribution: cultivating practices where environmental awareness, civic participation, and artistic experimentation converge into tangible forms of ecological democracy.
